The History and Innovations of Browning Safes
Our History
Provo Steel & Supply Company was founded in 1947 by F.L. (Shorty) Shurtliff with a vision to create a quality metalworking shop serving Utah's construction industry. With just $600 and a straightforward idea, the business quickly expanded to other cities and states, supplying steel handrails, stairwells, and structural steel.
In the early 1960s, the company, now renamed ProSteel Supply Company, landed a significant contract with the Tropicana Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. This contract catapulted ProSteel into becoming a major supplier of structural steel products.
In February 1977, a customer’s request for a secure place to store his guns and valuables inspired Shorty to start manufacturing gun safes. ProSteel quickly established a dealer network, selling safes across the United States, and demand soon consumed the company’s entire manufacturing capacity.
The Browning tradition of excellence began in 1878 with John Moses Browning's single-shot rifle. Since then, Browning has designed and sold some of the most legendary firearms in history. In January 1983, Browning contracted with ProSteel to become their exclusive safe supplier, combining Browning's legacy with ProSteel's manufacturing prowess.
Today, Browning Safes®, manufactured by ProSteel Security Products, are renowned for quality construction, proprietary technology, and patented interior designs, offering unparalleled security and peace of mind.

Patents & Features
Browning Safes® are known for their innovative features and patented technologies that set them apart in the industry. Here are some of the key patents and features:
DPX® Door Storage Panel
The DPX® Door Storage Panel with Quick Access Barrel Rack allows for the storage of gear, valuables, handguns, and long guns on the back of the door, doubling the number of firearms you can access quickly and easily. The DPX Scope Saver enables you to keep your optics on your long guns while stored in the safe.
Axis® Adjustable Shelving
Axis® Adjustable Shelving offers superior adjustability and can be easily modified to meet your storage needs. Paired with an extensive list of accessories, you can create the perfect interior that adapts as your needs change.
OmniBarrier® Lock Protection System
The OmniBarrier® Lock Protection System is engineered with steel hard plate and components to protect the safe lock from drill, punch, and push attacks.
Formed Door
Engineered with a rugged steel face, the Formed Door features inner plate and reinforcement panels that provide excellent strength and protection against attacks compared to competitors.
Reinforced Door Frame
The integrated return flange of the Reinforced Door Frame strengthens the door opening, adding pry and attack resistance.
Duo-Formed® Door
Made from multiple layers of steel formed together, the Duo-Formed® Door offers superior strength, pry resistance, and attack protection. A full second panel provides outstanding strength and rigidity.
Force Deflector™ Locking System
The patented Force Deflector™ Locking System features a rotating cam device that prevents prying or pounding forces from reaching the lock. This system is superior to most locking systems in the safe industry.
Pry-Stop End Bolts
Pry-Stop End Bolts secure the critical door corners. They are more than two and one-half times longer than regular bolts and attach to a high-strength steel angle to prevent the locking bolt support bar from bending in a pry attack.
Pry-Stop Corner Bolts
Pry-Stop Corner Bolts provide better protection than other pry-defense designs. Innovative long locking bolts extend diagonally from reinforced support at the door corners to protect against pry attacks.
180° Heavy Duty Exterior Hinges
These hinges allow the door to swing open 180° for unhindered access to the safe interior. Locking bolts maintain security if the hinges are cut off, and external hinges improve fire protection by eliminating the need to remove insulation.
Gear Drive™ Locking System
The Gear Drive™ Locking System, used in the finest Pro-Series locking mechanisms, employs robust cam locks and an extensive diversion bar system to prevent bolt or handle pressure from reaching the lock. Forces are diverted to the cams and bars for unmatched protection.
Hardened Pin Lock Protection
The Hardened Pin Lock Protection countermeasure protects the locking mechanism from drill attacks. The pins are designed to roll when a drill bit attempts to breach, preventing the bit from grabbing the material and reaching the lock.
Browning Safes®, manufactured by ProSteel Security Products, continue to set the standard for security, innovation, and quality, offering peace of mind to customers worldwide.
